These last few weeks have been quite busy with all of our fraction work. We've compared fractions with like denominators, like numerators, we've ever worked with finding a common denominator. I love hearing "I get it!" and "Oh I can do this!". On the days when math is especially difficult we often back up and try it again. Then we are more successful!
The few days before Thanksgiving vacation we were able to start adding and subtracting fractions. Luckily for us they already had like denominators. We will continue along this path for the next week or so, to be sure that we are all very comfortable with fractions. Below are are few of the problems students will see this week. 1/8+3/8+4/8= 11/10- 4/10- 1/10= 10/15+7/15+12/15+1/15= A baker has 2 pans of corn bread. He served 1 1/4 pans. what fractions of a pan was left? Joanie wrote a letter that was 1 1/4 pages long. Katie wrote a letter that was 3/4 page shorter than Joanie's letter. How long was Katie's letter?

The only way to be proficient in fraction calculation is to master the rules first. Then you also need to know some common tricks in fraction calculation. In practicing the rules, you need a fraction calculator to check you solution. This way you can be sure that you follow and practice the rules properly.
