That's right we are dividing in 4th grade! This week we will be working though division. Hopefully by the end of the week you child will be dividing the way you learned! That's the goal!!
We keep talking about how math will be important through out our lives and this week the topic came up again, as we were studying the Metric System. Knowing that this system is not used a lot in the USA students wondered why we take time to learn it. Besides the fact that it's part of our standards, why do we learn the metric system? I remember as a student asking why don't we use this system more? It is less complicated then the US system of measurement. But the advantages of learning the metric system do not stop there. Here are a few more reasons:
Metric units! That's right we are ready to explore conversion of metric units! We will be on this subject for a little over two weeks. The Big Ideas we want to get out of these few weeks are finding common units, and converting from one unit to another. We will be talking about place value and how to apply what we have learned to math ideas (addition, subtraction) that we have already mastered.
We will also be talking about how to apply this information to word problems. Before Christmas vacation 4th graders had an opportunity to take an interim ISAT assessment. As teachers we have gained a lot of valuable information about what we need to work on for the next few months. Including reading and following directions. We also will be working on how to review our work to be sure that we have answered questions completely. |
